Reform UK’s Anti-Science Vote Puts Kent’s Climate Future at Risk

At the most recent Kent County Council meeting, Reform UK councillors voted to scrap Kent’s Climate Emergency Declaration. This is a decision that directly contradicts the overwhelming scientific consensus on man-made climate change and our collective responsibility to act.

The Declaration, backed by cross-party consensus, had driven forward vital initiatives to protect Kent’s communities: boosting flood resilience, improving air quality, cutting energy bills, creating green jobs, and supporting clean energy and electric transport.

That hard-won progress is now under threat.

Liberal Democrat councillors stood firmly against the motion.

Maidstone County Councillor Geoffrey Samme condemned the decision as "reckless" and "anti-science," warning it will increase flood risks, raise energy bills, worsen air pollution, and even open the door to polluting fracking in Kent’s countryside.

This vote is more than political theatre — it risks real consequences for residents, businesses, and the environment. Reform UK’s actions abandon proven solutions and sideline the scientific consensus in favour of short-term ideology.

Climate change isn’t a distant threat — it’s here, now, and already affecting Kent. From extreme weather to rising energy costs, the impacts are clear.

We need urgent, united action — not denial and division. Kent must not step backwards.

Liberal Democrats remain committed to evidence-based climate leadership — protecting our communities, cutting emissions, and securing a cleaner, greener future for all.
