New Maidstone Budget to Tackle Poverty, Support Regeneration and Boost Nature Recovery Approved

Maidstone's Liberal Democrat - Green coalition council has approved a balanced budget for 2026/27, setting out a clear plan for investment across the borough while preparing responsibly for local government reorganisation.

Key Commitments

  • A 3% Council Tax increase — just £9 per year for a Band D property.

  • £8 million over two years into the Housing Investment Fund.

  • Town centre regeneration on Earl Street, including a new park at Maidstone East and a new River Medway bridge.

  • Earmarked reserves released to tackle poverty, support rural initiatives and boost economic development.

  • Increased investment in river restoration, nature recovery and climate action.

  • £300,000 set aside for Maidstone-specific costs linked to local government reorganisation.

The budget was agreed by Full Council on 25 February alongside a five-year Medium Term Financial Strategy and Year Two Action Plan. The Council's Chief Finance Officer confirmed that budget estimates are robust and reserves adequate.
