Liberal Democrat councillors have welcomed the approval of plans to transform Earl Street into a new car-free restaurant and café quarter in the heart of Maidstone.

The scheme, approved by the Council’s Cabinet, will create a vibrant café-culture destination from Week Street to Pudding Lane, with more space for pedestrians, outdoor dining, new seating and a greener, more welcoming public space.

The plans also include improvements to the setting of the Hazlitt Theatre and a more prominent and attractive entrance into the new restaurant quarter from Week Street.

Speaking at the meeting, Lib Dem Councillor Clive English said the proposals represent “a significant step forward” and, if delivered properly, will make a measurable difference to the quality of life for residents, visitors and local businesses.

Lib Dem Councillor Simon Wales also welcomed the decision as an important move to improve Maidstone town centre.

Liberal Democrat councillors have been clear that the success of the project will depend on getting the practical details right, including access for deliveries, taxis and the Hazlitt Theatre, as well as protecting disabled parking.

Earl Street is already home to a wide range of popular restaurants and pubs, and the new plans aim to help the area become a thriving destination for residents and visitors alike.
