Lib Dems Slam Reform’s detention by ballot box proposal

Statement from Councillor Antony Hook Liberal Democrat & Leader of the Opposition on Kent County Council

"Nigel Farage’s proposal to allocate detention centres based on voting patterns is not a policy; it is a protection racket.

In a liberal democracy, the state’s power must be managed with impartiality and a steadfast commitment to the rule of law. To suggest that a government would intentionally 'punish' communities for their democratic choices is a chilling glimpse into an authoritarian mindset that views the machinery of the state as a tool for partisan vendetta.

This 'detention by ballot box' strategy proves beyond doubt that Reform UK is fundamentally unfit for elected office. Governance is a responsibility to the entire nation, not a mechanism to reward cronies and penalise opponents.

When we plan national infrastructure, decisions must be based on evidence, logistics, and the national interest—not a map of political grudges. By abandoning these principles, Reform is signalling their contempt for the basic norms of British public life.

It is also deeply revealing that Mr. Farage views his own flagship policy as a burden to be 'inflicted' on others. If he believes these facilities are so detrimental that he must 'guarantee' his own voters are spared from them, he is effectively admitting his plans are a blight on the communities that host them.

As Liberal Democrats, we stand for a Britain that respects the dignity of the individual and the integrity of our institutions. We believe in an asylum system that is firm, fair, and legal—not one used as a stick to beat those who disagree with you.

Our residents deserve leadership, not playground bullying."
