Town Centre Parking Relief for Residents as Lib Dems Cut Night-Time Costs

28 Apr 2026

Residents living in Maidstone's Town Centre who struggle to find parking near their homes will benefit from a significant reduction in night-time parking charges, following action by the Liberal Democrat administration.

The previous Conservative administration-created Local Plan has led to substantial new residential development in the Town Centre, but many of the streets in these areas do not meet Department of Transport regulations required for the installation of residents' parking schemes — leaving many residents without a practical solution close to home.

Cabinet Member for Environmental Services Clive English and fellow councillor Dinesh Khadka had been receiving a growing number of requests from residents to address the problem. As Cabinet Member, Clive was able to act — championing a major cut to the cost of night-time season tickets in Council car parks as a practical way to ease the pressure. Annual season tickets have been reduced to just £90 per year, allowing holders to park in all Council long-stay and short-stay car parks between 5pm and 8am.

Clive said: "Ideally we would have residents' parking on these streets, but the regulations do not allow it. Therefore, we have cut the price of an annual season ticket for night-time parking in Town Centre car parks to £90 per year."

"We have been listening to residents and we were determined to find a way to help," added Dinesh. "While on-street residents' parking isn't possible under current regulations, this is a real and affordable difference we can make for people who depend on their car to get to work."

The new charge came into effect earlier this month.
