Climate Crisis, Local Action: Maidstone Councillors Hear the Briefing That Can't Be Ignored

19 May 2026

A cross-party group of Maidstone Borough Councillors, including Cllr Mike Thompson (pictured right), attended the National Emergency Briefing at the Maidstone Community Support Centre, Marsham Street, on 18 May.

The briefing focused on the growing impact of climate change on communities across the UK — an impact that is already being felt. More frequent and extreme weather events are damaging our infrastructure, disrupting farmers' ability to produce food, and driving increased demand on the NHS as temperatures rise.

But the message wasn't one of despair. The briefing made clear that solutions exist — and that by acting together, we can build safer, more resilient communities and secure a better future for ourselves and generations to come. The presentation concluded by highlighting actions already being taken by the community, Maidstone Borough Council, and individual councillors — alongside a call for all of us to do more, both as individuals and collectively.

Full details of the briefing can be found at the National Emergency Briefing on Climate & Nature website. If you'd like to attend a possible future local briefing, get in touch with Maidstone CAN at MaidstoneCAN@gmail.com
