Update: A249 and surrounding road closures


There will be a temporary overnight Road Closure for resurfacing works along Sittingbourne Road, Bearsted Road, Penenden Heath Road and Chiltern Hundreds Roundabout starting 9th June with an estimated completion date of the 4th July. These will run between 8:00pm to 6:00am every day except Sundays.

Lib Dem County Councillor Ian Chittenden commented, “We regularly receive complaints about, pothole, cracking and sinkage problems, particularly in relation to the Sittingbourne Road. This work is part of the opportunity being taken to resurface and repair major access road at a time when traffic flow is substantially reduced”.

 

The roads will be closed in three phases, as detailed below.

First Phase

  • A249 Sittingbourne Road, Maidstone will be closed from the roundabout opposite the Chiltern Hundreds to where it meets the A249 Albion Place.
  • A249 Albion Place, Maidstone will be closed from where it meets A249
    Sittingbourne Road & Andrew Broughton Way and between the junction with Kings Street to A249 Sittingbourne Road.
  • A249 Bearsted Road, Maidstone will be closed between the A249 Sittingbourne Road and Newnham Court Roundabout.
  • Penenden Heath Road, Maidstone will be closed between the A249 Sittingbourne Road and the junction with Boxley Road.

Second Phase

  • A249 Sittingbourne Road, Maidstone will be closed from the roundabout opposite the Chiltern Hundreds to where it meets the A249 Albion Place.
  • A249 Albion Place, Maidstone will be closed from where it meets A249 Sittingbourne Road & Andrew Broughton Way and between the junction with Kings Street to A249 Sittingbourne Road.

Third Phase

  • A249 Sittingbourne Road, Maidstone will be closed from the roundabout opposite Chiltern Hundreds to where it meets Albion Place.
  • A249 Albion Place, Maidstone will be closed from where it meets A249
    Sittingbourne Road & Andrew Broughton Way and between the junction with Kings Street to A249 Sittingbourne Road.
  • Holland Road, Maidstone will be closed between the junctions with Albion Place and Wheeler Street.


The closures are required for the safety of the public and workforce while carriageway resurfacing works are undertaken by Kent County Council.
The alternative route for traffic travelling between M20/A249 and Maidstone Town is via A249 Bearsted Road, M20 Junction 7 London bound, Exit M20 Junction
6, A229 Royal Engineers Road, Fairmeadow, Palace Avenue, A249 Wat Tyler Way and vice versa.


The alternative route for traffic unsuitable for motorway travel is via A249 Bearsted Road, New Cut Road, A20 Ashford Road and vice versa. There will also be a local diversion route in place for adjoining side roads. Access for emergency service vehicles and pedestrians will be maintained at all
times during the closure.
