Local liberal Democrats, residents and businesses all opposed the decision of the former Conservative administration to close the Town Centre Toilets. At the time the Conservatives argued all would be well because a new Community Toilets scheme would be introduced, utilising toilets in a number of Town centre businesses.
Recently a team of Liberal Democrat Councillors have audited all of the premises that participate in the Community toilet scheme and found that none of them met the criteria set out in the scheme.
Local Liberal Democrat Councillor Denise Joy said "Despite the Borough Council paying these businesses to participate none of the toilets met the standards required and some were not even open or accessible. Most were not sign posted and were poorly maintained, and with no indication of a cleaning schedule."
Councillor Derek Mortimer, Vice chairman of the Community Environment and Housing Committee added: " Our audit shows that the Community Toilet scheme is failing and does not represent value for money I have been investigating how to reintroduce a proper Town centre Toilet and this will shortly be being considered by the Committee.
