Michael Thompson

Candidate 2019

Mike Thompson is Maidstone born and bred.

He attended primary schools in Maidstone and Maidstone Grammar School, prior to studying modern languages at Oxford.

After living in Oxford, Germany, Nottingham, Liverpool and Watford, Mike returned to Kent and was an Education Officer with Kent County Council for 30 years. After "retirement" from KCC, he returned to teaching and taught in a variety of primary, secondary and special schools and pupil referral units across the County.

Mike has three sons, a daughter and three grandchildren. He is a school governor in Tunbridge Wells and a student at the London Czech Centre. He enjoys walking in the wonderful Kent countryside (with or without his dog) and watching football and cricket.

"I am delighted to be standing for election in Boxley ward. I believe that, although parts of Boxley are on the edge of the Borough that does not mean that their needs are in any way unimportant and, if elected, will strive to ensure that our voices are heard.

Two of my children grew up in Maidstone and attended local schools throughout their time in education: they had a safe, clean and healthy environment to grow up in and I want to do my best to ensure that future generations have the same.

As a regular church-goer, I am totally committed to a tolerant and inclusive society where every person can expect to be treated fairly and as a life-long Liberal Democrat, I believe passionately in empowering local communities. If elected, I will strive to represent everybody across the ward."

He is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Maidstone Community Mela and the Independent Police Advisory group relating to the Community. He is a Trustee of Collis Millennium Green Trust and helps run the Gurkha Boxing Club, open to all young people in Maidstone.

Dinesh says, "Traffic congestion and air pollution are a major concern affecting our Town Centre environment. With the increasing number of houses demanded by Government, the population of our Ward and Town Centre is raising serious concerns in relation to availability of local GP and other health facilities and the social and other infrastructure needed to support the changes. The maintenance of our green spaces and play areas, such as Mote Park, South Park and Collis Field will also be one of my priorities."

He further commented, "Having worked with the local Lib Dems in High Street ward for many years, I am delighted to have been selected to stand for the Borough Council on the 2nd May following Fran Wilson's decision to stand down as ward Councillor and leader of the Borough Council after a long and excellent record of service to local residents. If elected dealing with residents' concerns and problems will be my number one priority."
