Lib Dem call for additional Household Waste Recycling Centre in Maidstone leads to success at KCC

Lib Dems have campaigned for more than a decade for an additional waste recycling centre in the North West of Maidstone to reduce chronic pressure on the road network in South Maidstone. The existing site at Tovil is beyond capacity and serves as the only facility in the whole of the borough for residents as far as Lenham, Allington, Yalding and Staplehurst.

The provision of a new facility, which will be sited in Allington, has finally been confirmed in an announcement from KCC on 22nd May.

Following the announcement Lib Dem ward councillor Cllr Wilby commented, ‘Provision of a new site to reduce pressure on the facility at Tovil has been a campaign issue for our team for many years now. While we have worked with KCC, suggesting potential improvements at Burial Ground Lane and the site, we have always maintained that any quick fix would ignore the chronic need for a new facility to separately serve residents beyond our area”

Cllr Brian Clark continued, “With increasing housing numbers mandated by central government, there has been a dramatic increase in the associated need for waste facilities. With a small single facility surrounded by narrow lanes, residents have suffered from increasing levels of cross town traffic, queues at the centre and the knock on delays to bus services along Burial Ground Lane. We are delighted that our request for a new site has been given the green light”
