Easing the debt burden on low income households

At the Meeting of Maidstone Borough’s Councils Policy and Resources Committee on 12th February Liberal Democrat Councillors took action to support local residents who have been adversely affected by changes to the Council Tax System, by proposing that the Council sign up to guidance issued by the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and take action to address financial support for low-income households in financial difficulty.

The proposal was agreed despite being opposed by the Conservative Group Leader.

Liberal Democrat Leader of the Council and Chairman of the Committee Martin Cox said "Changes made in the Council Tax system by the Government have led to a worsening Debt situation for many residents and also increased the level of unpaid Council Tax.  By introducing a comprehensive debt recovery procedure and making the system easier to understand and by taking measures to assist those in financial difficulties earlier we can potentially prevent many problems, including mental health issues and homelessness due to debt."
