Clive English was elected to the Borough Council in 1994 and also served as a Member of Tovil Parish Council from 1987 until 2016. He spent most of his career at Royal Mail in Maidstone before retiring. He is currently Chairman of the Borough Council's Planning Committee and has previously served as a Cabinet Member and as Mayor of Maidstone.
He is a keen campaigner on planning and environmental issues and has been involved in defeating a number of ill considered development proposals including the proposed concrete recycling plant at Straw Mill Hill and has been involved in establishing a number of new nature reserves and parks, including the Hayle Park Nature Reserve, Holy Trinity Park, Len Valley Nature Reserve and Collis Millennium Green. Clive remains involved in the Collis Millennium Green as a trustee and is a member of the Board of the Len Valley Nature Reserve. Additionally he is a trustee of Cutbush and Corrall Almshouses and active in a number of other local organisations campaigning for better public transport, including the Medway Valley Community Rail Partnership.
