Boughton Monchelsea and Chart Sutton
The villages of Boughton Monchelsea and Chart Sutton are south of Maidstone town with their centres sitting on-top of the Greensand Ridge. Of the two Boughton Monchelsea is closer to Maidstone (3 miles south), and is the more populous. Chart Sutton (5 miles south), is resident to approximately 800 people.
The area has a rich history with local ragstone and the river Loose encouraging settlement in the Iron Age (evidence of Belgae settlement in Quarry Woods dates back to 40AD) and later Roman settlement with remains of a bathhouse and villa in the quarries, earthworks from workers settlements toward Wierton and a roman road (known locally as dead man's gully), running between the two villages.
