Last night (Monday 23rd January) was Maidstone Liberal Democrats Annual Dinner.
Our special guest was the Rt Hon Alistair Carmichael, Member of Parliament for Orkney and Shetland and the Liberal Democrat Shadow First Secretary of State.
The evening took place at the Mid Kent College Restaurant, with the food being served by College Students from the Catering Department. Our thanks go to the Catering Team for all their extremely creditable display of talent throughout the evening.
During the evening three of our Councillors received Long Service Awards:
- Ian Chittenden – 9 years as a Borough Councillor and 12 years as a County Councillor.
- Jenni Patterson – 21 years as a Borough Councillor.
- Dan Daley - 27 years as a Borough Councillor and 16 years as a County Councillor.
The Maidstone Liberal Democrat Council Group was also presented with an award from the Local Government Association for their work on the Borough Council. The Group achieved second place in the award for Liberal Democrat Council of the Year. During the evening Alistair Carmichael thanked the Group for their dedication and hard work and presented the award entitled, ‘Highly Commended Council 2016’ to Fran Wilson, Council Leader and Liberal Democrat Group Leader.
After being introduced by our Parliamentary Candidate Emily Fermor, Alistair Carmichael spoke to members about the current challenges facing MPs, membership surge, the importance of internationalism and the affect Brexit has had on the Party and Country. The speech ended on a positive and encouraging note, reminding us that we have the ability to shape the future of the Party and politics in Maidstone … so we better get out there and get on with it!
